Introduction:
|
This document describes how to obtain user accounts on multi-user systems managed by,
or hosted by, Educational and Information Technology. It also lists some of the
available features of those systems where possible.
Please note the following regarding accounts:
-
All enrolled UT students, and UT faculty and staff on the payroll receive POP3
e-mail accounts that must be activated by using the Requests system to assign
the account a password. These communities can also request Remote Access modem
accounts using Requests. All other accounts require written justification from
the prospective account owner's department!
-
If you need computing services other than e-mail (such as programming) and have no
specific system requirement, we will provide you with a Unix account.
-
If you need to use specific software offered only by a particular computer, we
will provide an account on that system alone.

POP Mail:
|
As stated above, all enrolled UT students and UT faculty and staff on payroll automatically
receive POP3 e-mail accounts. These accounts allow the holder to send and receive Internet
electronic mail using workstation software. POP3 accounts must be activated using the
Requests system before the first use, and they
remain active until the owner is no longer at UT. At such time the account is expired after
the 14th day of the term, and 30 days later is purged. This 30-day lag time gives the
account holder time to request any mail that they may wish to retain that they have not yet
read. Spring term POP3 accounts remain valid through the summer.

Remote Access:
|
Remote Access Accounts can be obtained by all UT students, faculty, and staff. These
accounts allow you to use a computer and a modem to access the UTNet modems, which in turn
allows you to access systems on UT's campus (such as the VM/CMS mainframe and the Digital
Unix and OpenVMS servers) and the Internet. You must have at least an ASCII terminal
communications program like Kermit to access the UTNet modems; Point-to-Point Protocol
(PPP) software is required to run graphic network applications. Users wishing to obtain a
Remote Access account should use the Requests
system. You can also use an ASCII communications program and a computer and call
419-530-6092 to access Requests.

*NOTE: All the following account types require written justification from the
user's department.
|
|
Unix:
|
Unix timesharing resides on Educational and Information Technology's Digital Equipment
Corporation Alpha Sable server running Digital Unix (formerly OSF/1). Unix offers Internet
access (WWW via Netscape and Lynx, Usenet News, Gopher, FTP, Telnet, mailx, MH, PINE, elm),
text formatting (TeX), and programming languages (FORTRAN, C, C++, others), and editors
like Emacs and vi. Unix timesharing can be accessed via networked workstations or from
Remote Access. To request a Unix account, contact the Educational and Information
Technology Service Request Line at extension 3644 (or send e-mail to
eitservice@utoledo.edu.
|
|
VM/CMS:
|
VM/CMS timesharing resides on Educational and Information Technology's IBM 9672-R14
mainframe computer. CMS offers Internet access (Gopher, FTP, Telnet, RMail), statistical
packages (SPSS, SAS), text formatting (SCRIPT) and programming languages (FORTRAN, COBOL,
PL/I, others). VM/CMS timesharing can be accessed via networked workstations or from
Remote Access. Historically this system has been used by administrative staff and by the
business, education, and social science disciplines. To request a VM/CMS account, contact
the Educational and Information Technology Service Request Line at extension 3644 (or send
e-mail to eitservice@utoledo.edu).
|
|
OpenVMS:
|
OpenVMS timesharing resides on Educational and Information Technology's Digital Equipment
Corporation Alpha 2100 4/2 server. OpenVMS offers Internet access (WWW via Lynx, Usenet
News, Gopher, FTP, Telnet, Mail), statistical packages (Minitab), text formatting (TeX),
and programming languages (FORTRAN, BASIC, Pascal, and C), and editors like Emacs, Eve,
and LSE. OpenVMS timesharing can be accessed via networked workstations or from Remote
Access. Historically this system has been used by the engineering, mathematics, and
physical science disciplines. To request an OpenVMS account, contact the Educational and
Information Technology Service Request Line at extension 3644 (or send e-mail to
eitservice@utoledo.edu).
|
|
Network:
|
Network accounts reside on NT servers managed by Educational and Information Technology
that are attached to the UTNet Wide Area Network. UTNet servers offer Internet electronic
mail (Outlook) in addition to other services. Network servers can be accessed only from
campus networked workstations. Different software may be available for PCs and Macintoshes.
To request a network server or Outlook account, contact the Educational and Information
Technology Service Request Line at extension 3644 (or send e-mail to
eitservice@utoledo.edu).
